Last year we decided to try a vegetable garden. I've never done it before, and I had no clue what I was doing. With a little help from my mama, google and pinterest. We became pros overnight.

I like to be a little extra. And they’re kids so. Don’t you want to make it extra special for them?
We bought seeds for some, and plants from the Regional Market, as well as Chuck Hafners.
I found old pieces of wood laying around the house and bought stakes from Home Depot.
I measured and bought cedar would because it prevents the wood from rot and withstand all the watering and rain.
So next I started by searching bed layouts and what grew in what seasons, and which thrived in our zones. There was alot I didn't know about like how tomotoes grow well next to vegetables were as garlic cant be next to brocolli. Never knew that. Certain budding flowers like cucumbers with vines can strangle other plants as well. Soil. I think that soil is also another huge thing and you should have it tested. You can buy a testing kit to test for Ph levels from amazon. You can click on the link here.

Where you plant and grow your food is important as well as the water your watering it with because it is going to go into your body so I wanted to make sure it was healthy. We're a zone 5 so, its clay mostly. Some fruits and plants to better than others. I did a somewhat raised bed and lined it then covered it with soil that I purchased from a local greenhouse. Chuck Hafners. Another cool hack is lining it with newspaper. It's cheap and will keep the weeds from coming through.
I wanted this to be a bonding time between my daughter and I. I have to admit most times I did most of the tending, but when she did go out and do it, she loved it.
So this was first years. It did pretty well for a first timer. Cucumbers thrived, as well as tomatoes and basil, we had a couple that got lost in the mix, but learn for next time.
As you can tell, she loves it.
I found stones from Lowe’s for like a dollar that she could walk across and not bother the beds. I think that was her favorite.
You can tell that I pre picked before some were ripe and others a little larger. They were the freshest most delicious vegetables I’ve ever Had. So juicy.
I love the fact that if we're grilling, or If I'm making mojitos (this years plan ;) this mamas learnin. That its just so accessable and just right outside. Grilling steaks? Want salad? Just walk out to your back yard.
So my plans for this year are a little more advanced. I think big. I dream big. So when I do something, I go all in.
I think that gardens can be art no matter what the subject is. Food included. So until I get my estate in France, or my villa in some village In Italy I am going to bring it to me. :)
Hope you enjoyed this post!
